How we will be celebrating Australia Day at The Westport Club

The history of Australia Day

Here at The Westport Club, we love celebrating Australia Day as it’s a day that is dear to many Australians. But what actually is the meaning of this day?

Celebrated with a public holiday each year on 26 January, Australia Day marks the anniversary of the First Fleet arriving at Port Jackson, NSW in 1788. On arrival the First Fleet raised the Great Britain Flag at Sydney Cove.

In contemporary Australia, the day has come to be a celebration of the Australian culture, its diversity and our multi-cultural society. National celebrations usually include the presentation of the Australian of the Year Awards, announcement of the Australia Day Honours list and official addresses by the Governor-General of Australia and the Prime Minister.

Australian Citizenship Ceremonies are held across the country, welcoming new Australians, and the Australia Day Awards are also presented by local councils, recognising the achievements and community service of upstanding members of the local community.

Most Australians will celebrate with their friends and family by getting together for lunch, enjoying Australian pastimes like a game of cricket or heading to the beach for a day in the sunshine!
